Asthma is a condition that can start at any age, and symptoms can occur in several different ways like wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness. Symptoms can be caused by a variety of underlying triggers such as allergenic irritants such as pollen or animal dander, chemical irritants like smoke or strong chemical odors, and changes in temperature or humidity. When you establish care with one of our providers, we will discuss previous your treatments, any testing you may have had, and the severity of your symptoms. Depending on those answers we may order tests such as complete pulmonary function tests (CPFT’s), imaging such as chest x-rays or CT scans, or blood tests. These tests will help to further classify the severity of your asthma and determine what type of therapy will be most beneficial to your treatment. Medication options may be inhalers, nebulized medication, and in some cases, biologic injectable medications. We strive to work with our patients to create a care plan to help reduce the severity and frequency of daily symptoms and improve your quality of life.
The immune system keeps us healthy and if it is not functioning as it should, it can result in diseases. Immune responses can contribute to the development of many common disorders not traditionally viewed as immunologic such as metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative conditions.
There are three common types of allergens: environmental, insect, and food. Sneezing, coughing and fatigue are common symptoms of environmental allergies such as dust mites or mold. Insect and food allergies can have more serious symptoms such as hives, lip swelling, or anaphylaxis.
Allergy shots are regular injections used to stop or reduce allergy attacks. Patients usually receive these injections for 3-5 years. Over time, these shots desensitize your immune system, so your body builds up a tolerance to the allergens. Allergy shots can reduce symptoms caused by seasonal or indoor allergens.
An allergy skin test is when your skin is exposed to suspected allergy-causing substances and then observed for signs of an allergic reaction. Testing meets FDA requirements and is generally safe and effective for adults and children of all ages. We can test for allergies caused by food, insects, and many others.
